Chapter Twelve

Ryan

“Got a surprise for you!” Nat said enthusiastically the second Ryan picked up the phone.

“Shit.” Ryan leaned heavily against the counter in the rink kitchen. “How many of them have the flu now?” Some kind of virus had been sweeping through the Squirts lately, knocking their whole team into disarray.

Nat laughed, the rich warmth of his voice perfect even through a tinny cell phone speaker. “Something more exciting than that.”

“Uh huh?” Ryan chuckled. “Did someone break a leg as well?”

“You’re just being a tease now,” Nat told him. “My parents want to take Jae to a concert at the seniors’ center Saturday night. Which, if I’m not mistaken, isn’t a night you have a game?” His voice seemed to be getting rougher as he spoke, and Ryan had a sudden realization that this was a bad conversation to be having with his teammates all around him.

“Oh?” he said, a little faintly, and rushed off into the hall, pushing past teammates as he went. Around the corner, he pulled up and leaned against the concrete of the wall, phone back up to his ear. “Shit, Nat,” he said earnestly. “You can’t do these things to me when I’m at work.”

“It’s eleven in the morning,” Nat said, sounding amused. “I’m at work too.”

“Well, some of us don’t have our own offices,” Ryan grumbled.

Nat ignored him. “So what do you think about Saturday?”

“You should definitely come over,” Ryan agreed, fully distracted from his complaints by the thought of an end to his frustrated waiting.

"What time do you want me to come over?" Nat asked.

As early as possible, Ryan wanted to say. He swallowed, his mind full of possibilities. "Late afternoon? We can get takeout," he said instead, mentally patting himself on the back for not saying anything too creepy out loud.

"Did you want me to bring anything?"

"Just you," Ryan said. "I'll take care of everything else."

"Sounds good," Nat said. "I can't wait to see you." Maybe it was just Ryan's imagination, but Nat's voice seemed quieter now, lower in timbre, and it made Ryan's heart beat just a tiny bit faster.

They said their goodbyes, and Ryan walked back to the locker room. He needed to shake the thoughts of Nat out of his head. He was at work, for fuck's sake. His attempts at distraction, however, were futile. All he could think about was kissing Nat again.

It wasn't any better Saturday night, as he sat on his couch waiting for his buzzer to ring. He'd been thinking about Nat for days, waiting in anticipation for whatever the night was going to bring. He felt restless, nervous, and it was like he was in fucking high school all over again.

Ryan flipped through the television, mindlessly searching for something to watch. He wasn't sure what they're were going to do tonight. For all he knew, they were just going to have dinner. Which was fine. He would be okay with just dinner.

Except he would be lying if he didn't say he wanted more.

He didn't just want to kiss Nat.
